Although there is a lot of volatility in the markets at the moment we have still seen a lot of business from the corporate part of the bank come through. It has been interesting over the last couple of months to see how the market turmoil has affected our clients and also working on structures which can mitigate the risk for our clients.

After working here for a year and gaining experience from working with colleagues, I am now starting to take the lead roll in the deal process. The people are fully supportive here which provides a good opportunity to learn from more experienced colleagues.

The markets continue to be volatile; the events over the last couple of months are seen to be a one in ten years event. It has proven a good opportunity to talk to more experienced people in the team and learn from the events they have lived through previously. The wide range of opinions at the moment make it even more interesting to follow the market.

Last week I went on a training course; BOS Treasury gives you the opportunity to choose what training you would like. When you first join part of the graduate scheme it involves going on several training courses. After this you can discuss with your manager which skills they think you need to develop and from there, you can tailor your training to your team needs.

The last two weeks have been extremely active in the markets, the events which have unfolded are very uncommon and hence it has been interesting to get exposure to the market at such an early stage in my career and more importantly see how it has impacted our customers. The events are perceived to be one in ten year events so it has been extremely interesting to get an understanding of them in the early stages.

We have seen HBOS Treasury re-brand itself to Bank of Scotland Treasury over the previous two weeks, which has led to the opportunity for me to give some input into the new marketing for the team.

Last week we have had the Treasury summer party which as always was an interesting event. It is the only time in the year when all area's of treasury meet up, it is held in an impressive place and there is often entertainment for everyone. It is a good opportunity to put a face to a name as during regular business there is a lot of interaction with the support functions.

The main focus of my role is to support the senior sales people around me, this gives me a good opportunity to learn and ask questions. I have been impressed by the amount of responsibility I have been given at such an early stage, this has involved working on two of the largest projects in corporate sales and more importantly having an input into the process. I am starting to look after my own projects, of course on a smaller scale, as well as support the other members of the team with the more complex transactions.

Most of the week was spent preparing for the week ahead, this involves creating presentations for customer meetings or pricing a range of structured products to show the clients. At the end of the week I closed a trade with one of our customers which were a good finish to the week.

As last week was quiet I managed to spend some time with Securitisation and FX Private Equity learning about their rolls. Most people will be prepared to spend some time with you and answer any questions you have, which is a good part of the HBOS culture.

On Thursday of last week we had a team night out at Tower 42 followed by a meal at the Gaucho Grill, was a good night socialising with the team.

As with any trading floor environment you have to ensure you push yourself and make sure you are constantly developing your skill base. It is quite easy at this stage in your career because there are so many opportunities jumping in front of you, you have to make sure you take them.
